The job
When the top of a silo lets go
A silo holding bulk carbon dust popped open at the top. The dust went out over a radius of roughly 500 metres, and came down on the silos, on the pathways between them and across the outside walls of the warehouses next door.
Some of the buildings that needed cleaning did not belong to the client. Their neighbours’ walls were part of the scope.
The risk in the clean
Carbon off, paint on
The risk was the paint. The wrong chemical can strip it, and here that would have happened on walls the client does not own.
So the chemical was picked because it is known to be non-abrasive and would not strip paint from the warehouses. Elevating work platforms went in for the height, along with the pressure cleaning gear.
How it ran
Six days, eight people
The silos, the surrounding buildings and the pathways were all cleaned. About six days on site, with eight people.
Nothing unexpected turned up along the way. The clean-up ran to plan.
It was a $30,000 to $50,000 job.
